Penso a fontanesi come a un illustratore del Cinquecento che, davanti al compito di disegnare un capodoglio, si rende conto di dover illustrare non solo un animale che non ha mai visto, ma che non ha nemmeno strette parentele con ciò che nuota, corre e vola sulla Terra. Così, davanti all’alieno e al misterioso, si ritrova costretto a inventarsi una propria cetologia attraverso i racconti e le descrizioni dei marinai. fontanesi ricostruisce la realtà basandosi su una sensazione lontana: deforma, unisce, comprime, taglia, ingrandisce, il tutto per restituirci l’idea di un mondo buffo e delirante che si sovrappone al nostro. E così come nel Cinquecento un narvalo poteva trasformarsi in un unicorno, le nostre città di provincia sotto la lente di fontanesi si popolano di creature magiche, oggetti mistici e mostri leggendari. fontanesi è anche e soprattutto la creazione di un folklore provinciale moderno fatto di anziani con due teste, bicchieri di Aperol a cui spuntano i piedi, corpi umani che germogliano da corpi umani, macchine che – in bilico tra Munari e Goldberg – diventano sia impossibili che inutili. fontanesi ripopola il nostro quotidiano di yokai, folletti e spiriti protettori che, impressi nella nostra mente, non tarderanno a comparirvi davanti non appena vi ritroverete a fissare la folla mentre aspettate il tram, fate colazione in un dehor o siete in fila alla macchinetta per pagare il parcheggio sulle striscie blu. Vi scapperà un sorriso. Salutate la stramba creatura e ringraziate fontanesi di averla evocata per rendere migliore la vostra giornata.

I think of fontanesi as a sixteenth century illustrator who, when faced with the task of representing a whale, realizes not only must he depict something which he has never seen but something which bears no relation to that which swims, runs of flies the earth. And so, before the misterious and the unknown, he must invent his own cetology using the tales and descriptions of the sailors.
fontanesi reconstructs reality based on a distant perceptions: he deforms, unites, compresses, cuts and enlarges the whole to give us the impression of a and delirious world superimposed on our own. Just as a narwhal could be turned into a unicorn in the sixteenth century, our provincial cities under fontanesi’s lens are populated with magical creatures, mystical objects and monsters of legend. Above all, fontanesi is the creation of a modern provincial folklore comprised of two-headed geriatrics, glasses of Aperol with feet sticking out, human bodies that sprout from human bodies, cars that - a cross between Munari and Goldberg - become both impossible and useless. fontanesi repopulates our everyday with yokai, goblins and protective spirits which, impressed in our mind, don’t delay in appearing before us as soon as we find ourselves staring at the crowd while waiting for a tram, having breakfast outside or in line to pay for parking. A smile will escape you. Greet the strange creature and thank fontanesi for evoking it to brighten up your day.
