La quarta persona del singolare è, secondo il filosofo francese Gilles Deleuze, il risultato di combinazioni di diversi punti di vista che nel linguaggio assumono la forma di “discorso indiretto libero”, in cui il soggetto che pronuncia tale discorso è letteralmente irriconoscibile. Una sorta di trascendenza, un paradosso linguistico che trova nell’indefinibilità il suo segno logico, la sua essenza.
Nel tempo della sua creazione, il libro che avete tra le mani ha più o meno consciamente subìto un sovvertimento espressivo di analogo valore, trovando nell’accumulo la sua forma, nella dispersione il suo tempo, nel conflitto l’idea, nella ricerca la sua soggettività. Nella Storia, tramite cui nessuno parla e che tuttavia esiste, la sua bussola impazzita, la sua narrazione.
Testimone - vittima e carnefice - di questo viaggio è una sottile zolla di mondo in grembo al Mediterraneo, la Calabria. Caso - studio e spazio - mondo di questa ricerca, realizzata a quattro mani tra il 2015 ed il 2017, essa è il perimetro geografico e metaforico entro cui “In Quarta Persona” organizza il suo ecosistema visivo. Scheletri, mito e barricate; farfalle, miracoli e macerie; famiglia, emancipazione e isolamento; utopia, rivolta e sparizione. Sagome che qui la Storia ha impresso; in quei paesaggi, che nella caotica ed ingenua plasticità delle immagini, proviamo a riesumare e mettere in rigoroso, forsennato dialogo. Naturale, sociale, politico, familiare, artificiale; fotografico, storico, immaginario, metafisico; della memoria, individuale e collettiva: è forse il paesaggio quel soggetto in quarta persona tramite cui nessuno parla e che tuttavia esiste?
Anche qui d’altronde, in uno dei tanti Sud, a partire dagli anni ’60, nel pieno del cosiddetto miracolo economico, le società di quel nuovo avvenire intrapresero un radicale, incondizionato processo di trasformazione dei territori e dei costumi, in nome di un progresso fatto di nuove macchine, nuove strade, nuovi slogan. Con l’industrializzazione, in tutti i paesaggi si inaugurava il mondo moderno, imponendo i suoi linguaggi e la sua estetica, ma soprattutto un nuovo Potere, che in Calabria - o in uno dei tanti sud - offrì agli uomini comuni due destini: da oppressi o da corrotti. A separarli, vi fu immaginato un deserto.

La Storia evocata in questo libro è quindi la nostra, precaria perché plurale: spesso dispersa nei misteri del potere, taciuta, rimossa, in altri casi solo archiviata, essa si racconta ancora sul retro di una vecchia fotografia. O nella fatica del lavoro, nella polvere dei documenti, nel fumo dei ricordi, nelle parole di lotta e in una squallida, umana impotenza. Il destino delle immagini, degli uomini e delle loro storie trova vita in quelle lesioni che, tramite una pratica attiva della memoria, da deposito inerte diventano finalmente strumento per una nuova narrazione, in cui liberamente poter raccontare ciò che si è visto, rivendicare ciò che si è perso, celebrare ciò che si è amato. 

In Quarta Persona è il primo progetto realizzato dal duo Martin Errichiello & Filippo Menichetti. 

Ha ricevuto numerosi riconoscimenti tra cui tra cui FOAM Talent 2017 (Foam Museum, Amsterdam), Lucy Art Residency 2018 (Lucy Art Foundation, Greece), Plat(t)form #17 (Fotomuseum Winterthur), Premio Pesaresi per la Fotografia Contemporanea 2016. E' stato esposto in musei, gallerie e festival tra cui: Cina (Echoes of Anthropocene, Beijing), Stati Uniti (Foam Talent exhibition, New York), BJCEM (Biennale dei giovani artisti Tirana), Francia (Circulations, Parigi), Inghilterra (Format Festival, Derby), Germania (Triennale di Amburgo), Italia (Palazzo Poli, Roma). 

Il lancio ufficiale del libro In Quarta Persona è previsto per l'8 Giugno 2018 presso l'Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Amburgo, nell'ambito della Triennale di Amburgo, dove il lavoro sarà anche in mostra.

And he is the voice of the fourth person singular in which nobody speaks and which yet exists.

According to French philosopher Gilles Deleuze, the fourth person singular is the result of combining different points of view. Linguistically this combination takes the shape of “free indirect discourse” where the narrator is literally unrecognisable. A sort of transcendence, a linguistic paradox that finds its logic, its essence, in its indefinable.
During its creation, the book you’re holding has undergone an expressive disruption of similar value, finding its shape in accumulation, its time in dispersion, its idea in conflict, its subjectivity in the act of research itself. In History, the voice in which nobody speaks and which yet exists, it has found its narrative, its spinning compass.
A thin strip of land in the womb of the Mediterranean sea has been witness — victim and perpetrator — to this journey: Calabria. Case – study of this research, a two-man job realised between 2015 and 2018, it is the geographic and metaphorical perimeter within which “In Quarta Persona” organises its visual ecosystem. Skeletons, myth and barricades; butterflies, miracles and rubble; family, emancipation and isolation; utopia, revolt and disappearance. Silhouettes impressed there by History: in those landscapes that, through the chaotic and naive plasticity of images, we try to exhume and to set in a rigorous, frenzied dialogue. Natural, social, political, familial, artificial; photographic, historical, imaginary, metaphysical; belonging to memory, individual and collective: could the landscape be the subject in fourth person in which nobody speaks and which yet exists?
After all, here too, in one of the many South, beginning in the 60s - in the midst of the so-called economic miracle, the societies involved in that new future started a radical, unconditional process of transformation of lands and customs, in the name of a certain progress, made up of new machines, new roads, new slogans. With industrialisation, the modern world was inaugurated across every landscape, by imposing its codes and aesthetics, but above all a new Power, which in Calabria — or in one of the many South — offered the common man two destinies: either be oppressed or be corrupted. 
A desert was imagined, in between.

The History evoked in this book is thusly ours, precarious because plural: often dispersed in the mysteries of power, kept quiet, erased, at times just shelved, this history still reveals itself on the back of an old photograph. Or in the toils of work, in the dust of documents, in the haze of memories, in the slogans of protest and in a squalid, human impotence. The destiny of images, of people and their stories finds new life in those lesions which, through an active exercise of memory, from inert deposit finally becomes a tool for a new narrative, where to freely tell what one has seen, reclaim what one has lost, celebrate what one has loved.

In Quarta Persona is the first project realized by the duo Martin Errichiello & Filippo Menichetti.
